Distribution networks across NSW, ACT, and South Australia are preparing to charge solar owners for exporting energy to the grid. Essential Energy starts July 2024, with Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy, Evoenergy, and SA Power Networks following in 2025. Meanwhile, large generators pay nothing for the same service. The result? Potentially losing over 40% of current rooftop solar capacity in NSW alone, higher prices for everyone, and big energy wins again.
In August 2021, the Australian Energy Market Commission deleted a rule that protected small solar owners from paying to export energy to the grid. Large generators pay nothing for the same service. ACOSS and the Total Environment Centre pushed for the change, claiming it would help the poor and the environment. Instead, it protects big energy from competition, removes small generators from the market, and ensures everyone pays more. Victoria said no. The rest of the eastern states said yes.
